Song of the Day: Lady Marmalade

Today’s song is Lady Marmalade by ‘Various Artists’.

A catchy pop/hip-hop song (with a twinge of soul for good measure) from the Moulin Rouge! soundtrack.
Nothing against the original made famous by Patti LaBelle.

This version for the soundtrack is performed by Christina Aguilera, Pink, Lil’ Kim and Mýa.

So much irony in the french lyric: “Voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir?”
It translates to “Would you like to sleep with me tonight?”, which is hilarious.
“Lady Marmalade” is a song about a prostitute, but Patti LaBelle, the lead female vocal of the band, didn’t know that.
All it takes one listen to understand the meaning. I mean, come-on.

Creole Lady Marmalade.

It has exceptional vocals, fun progression and a ton of energy. A bit goofy, but I love it.

As far as collaborations go, this one is rather fascinating.
Yeah, it’s steeped in early 2000’s flavor, but that makes it somewhat distinct.

All of the solo moments offer fun elements.
Is it a bit messy? Yeah, but it’s still worth examining.
When they all belt the lyrics together it really works.
If you don’t care for it, LaBelle’s version is still excellent.
