Song of the Day: Somebody That I Used To Know

Today’s song is Somebody That I Used To Know by Gotye.

Art Pop.
A Belgain-Australian and a Kiwi made a one-hit wonder that now defines the early 2010’s.

This song is heartbreaking when you delve into the lyrics.
Many have felt relief being away from someone, but the way they move on can feel cruel.

Now and then I think of all the times you screwed me over,
but had me believing it was always something that I’d done.

The chords are simple, but that use of Xyophone and the cutting lyrics really pop against it.

As a duet, the song really shines with that duality.
Works to showcase both sides of the difficult relationship.

There is this bizarre cover that came out a year later by Your Favorite Martian.
It isn’t incredible, but for some reason, it still takes up space in my brain.
Figured you might be curious about it.
