Song of the Day: Vienna

Today’s song is Vienna by Billy Joel.

Soft Rock.
“Don’t you ever besmirch Billy Joel.”

One of my favorite B-sides.
It’s such a soothing melody, with lyrics that still fit over 40 years later.

Slow down you crazy child.
Take the phone off the hook and disappear for a while.
It’s alright, you can afford to lose a day or two.

Life has a tendency to induce panic. This song helps combat that.

The lyrics really delve into the nature of the ‘rat race’ and trying to meet expectations.
You could claim that there is a spiritual element (afterlife), but I view it more than that.
It’s more like ‘old age’ brings a calm that the youthful fail to consider in their haste.

This is one of my favorite songs.
For some reason, I enjoy butchering this at karaoke.
